U.S. Army Private First Class Alan Howard Newton Jr., 26, of Asheboro, North Carolina, died on October 2, 2009, at the Role 3 hospital at Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan.

U.S. Army Specialist Brandon Andre Owens, 21, of Memphis, Tennessee, died on October 2, 2009, from hostile action at Forward Operating Base Shank in Logar Province, Afghanistan.

Captain Benjamin A. Sklaver, 32, of Medford, Massachusetts, was a civil affairs officer serving with the U.S. Army's 422nd Civil Affairs Battalion, attached to Task Force Stryker in Afghanistan.

Sgt. Aaron Michael Smith, 25, of Manhattan, Kansas, was a U.S. Army infantryman serving with Task Force Spartan in Afghanistan. He died on October 2, 2009, in Wardak province.

U.S. Army Specialist Russell Shane Hercules Jr., 22, of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, died on October 1, 2009, at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, from hostile enemy fire.

Sgt. Roberto Daniel Sanchez, 24, of Patrick Air Force Base, Florida, was a U.S. Army Ranger assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. He was killed in action in the Zharay District of Afghanistan on October 1, 2009.
