Staff Sgt. David Alan Wieger was a 28-year-old Air Force investigator from North Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. He was assigned to Detachment 303, 3rd Field Investigation Squadron, based at Travis Air Force Base in California. The unit's mission involved conducting criminal investigations and counterintelligence operations.
On November 1, 2007, Wieger was killed in the town of Orion, located in Iraq's Diyala province northeast of Baghdad. According to U.S. military reports, he died from wounds sustained during a hostile incident. The Department of Defense stated he was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom at the time of his death.
Operation Iraqi Freedom was a U.S.-led military campaign that began with an invasion in March 2003. By late 2007, the conflict was characterized by intense counterinsurgency operations and sectarian violence, particularly in provinces like Diyala. U.S. and Iraqi forces were engaged in efforts to stabilize areas outside the capital.
Following his death, the Air Force posthumously awarded Wieger the Bronze Star Medal with Valor and the Purple Heart. His body was returned to Pennsylvania, where he was buried with military honors at Penn Lincoln Memorial Park.
Wieger is remembered by his unit and community as a dedicated investigator. His name is inscribed on the Air Force Memorial and is included on casualty lists honoring service members who died in the Iraq War.
