Their Story

Dewayne Lenell White was a 27-year-old Private from Country Club Hills, Illinois. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Private White died on December 4, 2007, in Bayji, Iraq, from wounds sustained during a hostile incident. The city of Bayji, located north of Baghdad, was a frequent site of insurgent activity and a key battleground for control of a major oil refinery.

White's death occurred during a period of intense sectarian violence and insurgent warfare in Iraq. The years 2006 and 2007 were among the deadliest of the conflict for U.S. forces, marked by a surge in troop levels and major combat operations against insurgent strongholds.

The Department of Defense announced his death on December 6, 2007. He was survived by his family in Illinois. His name is inscribed on the Iraq War Memorial in his hometown of Country Club Hills.

Private White is memorialized on Panel 31E, Row 88 of the National Memorial Wall of the Global War on Terrorism at the Pentagon. His unit, the 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, known as the 'Bulldogs,' sustained numerous casualties during its deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
