Marie Colvin was an American foreign correspondent for The Sunday Times of London. She was killed in Homs, Syria, on February 22, 2012.

Their Story

Marie Colvin was a veteran war correspondent who reported for The Sunday Times of London for over a quarter of a century. She was known for her coverage of conflicts in Chechnya, Kosovo, Sri Lanka, and the Middle East, and was recognized by her trademark eye patch, worn after losing an eye to shrapnel in Sri Lanka in 2001.

On February 22, 2012, Colvin was staying in a makeshift media center in the besieged Baba Amr district of Homs, Syria, to report on the government's bombardment of the city. According to survivor accounts and reports from the Committee to Protect Journalists, the building was deliberately targeted by Syrian government artillery, killing Colvin and French photojournalist Rémi Ochlik. Several other journalists were wounded.

Colvin was killed during the Syrian Civil War, which began in 2011 with anti-government protests before escalating into a full-scale armed conflict. The city of Homs was a focal point of early fighting and was subjected to sustained siege and shelling by Syrian government forces in early 2012.

Her death was widely reported and condemned by media organizations and governments. The Sunday Times stated she was 'targeted for being a journalist.' In 2019, a U.S. federal court found the Syrian government liable for her death in a wrongful death lawsuit brought by her family.

Colvin is remembered for her dedication to reporting from the front lines and bearing witness to the impact of war on civilians. A foundation in her name supports journalists reporting from conflict zones, and her life has been the subject of documentaries and a biographical film.
