Anthony Shadid was a Pulitzer Prize-winning American journalist for The New York Times. He died on February 16, 2012, while reporting in Syria.

Their Story

Anthony Shadid was a foreign correspondent for The New York Times and The Washington Post, known for his deep reporting on the Middle East. Born in Oklahoma City in 1968 to Lebanese-American parents, he won two Pulitzer Prizes for his coverage of the U.S. invasion of Iraq and the Arab Spring.

On February 16, 2012, Shadid died from an asthma attack while on assignment in Syria. He was part of a two-person team that had just crossed the Turkish border into Syria on foot to report on the escalating conflict. According to his colleague, Shadid suffered a severe asthma attack, likely triggered by an allergic reaction to horses used during the crossing, and could not be revived.

Shadid was reporting on the early stages of the Syrian civil war, which began in March 2011 with anti-government protests. By early 2012, the conflict had descended into widespread violence between government forces and armed opposition groups, creating a dangerous environment for journalists, many of whom operated clandestinely.

His death was reported by major news organizations globally. The Committee to Protect Journalists documented his case, and colleagues described him as a meticulous and courageous reporter who provided essential context to the region's conflicts.

Shadid is remembered for his nuanced, humanistic writing that centered the experiences of ordinary people in wartime. His final book, 'House of Stone,' about rebuilding his family home in Lebanon, was published posthumously.
