David Michael Branning, a 21-year-old Marine from Cockeysville, MD, was killed in Fallujah, Iraq on November 12, 2004 during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Their Story

David Michael Branning, a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps, was a young serviceman whose life ended during a pivotal moment in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Born and raised in Cockeysville, Maryland, Branning served his country as a member of Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines, part of the Regimental Combat Team 7 under the 1st Marine Division.

On November 12, 2004, Branning was involved in the Second Battle of Fallujah, a major combat operation aimed at regaining control of the city from insurgents. The battle, known for its intensity and high casualty rate, marked a significant phase in the Iraq conflict. Branning's unit was stationed at Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe Bay before their deployment.

The circumstances leading to Branning's death were characteristic of the hostile environment faced by coalition forces in Fallujah. Engaged in close-quarters combat, the operation required courage and determination from all involved. Branning's passing was a stark reminder of the human cost of military operations.

The news of his death was received with profound sadness by his family, fellow Marines, and the community in Cockeysville. His name was entered into the Defense Casualty Analysis System, marking his sacrifice in service to his nation. Operation Iraqi Freedom, which began in March 2003, saw many such losses before it concluded in August 2010.
