CPL Jonathan Williams Bowling was a native of Stuart, Virginia. Born in 1981, Bowling grew up in a close-knit community that valued service and commitment. He joined the United States Marine Corps and was assigned to C Company, 4th Combat Engineer Battalion, 4th Marine Division, based in Lynchburg, Virginia.
As a Marine Reservist, Bowling was deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The operation commenced in March 2003, with the stated aim of ending the regime of Saddam Hussein and eliminating Iraq's alleged weapons of mass destruction.
