CPL Kirk Jay Bosselmann was a Marine who hailed from Napa, California. He served in the United States Marine Corps, specifically with the Headquarters and Service Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, part of the Regimental Combat Team 7, 1st Marine Division, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
Bosselmann was deployed to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began in March 2003. The operation aimed to overthrow the regime of Saddam Hussein and establish a democratic government, but soon faced significant insurgency and sectarian violence, particularly in cities like Fallujah.
