Val John Borm, an American soldier from Sidney, NE, died at age 21 on June 14, 2007, in Kirkuk, Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Their Story

Val John Borm served as a Specialist in the United States Army. He was assigned to Company B, 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry based at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. Borm's unit was part of the U.S. forces engaged in Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began in March 2003.

Borm enlisted in the Army with a commitment to serve his country. His deployment took him to Iraq, where his unit was involved in operations around the city of Kirkuk. Kirkuk, a strategic location due to its oil resources and diverse population, was a center of military activity during the conflict.

On June 14, 2007, Borm was killed in action in Kirkuk. The U.S. Army recorded his death as resulting from hostile action. This reflects the ongoing dangers faced by military personnel deployed in conflict zones.

Borm's passing at a young age is a reminder of the human cost of military operations. His family and community in Sidney, Nebraska, mourned his loss alongside the broader nation, which continues to remember the contributions and sacrifices of its service members.

Operation Iraqi Freedom, which saw significant U.S. military engagement, officially concluded in August 2010. However, its impacts continue to resonate in both the United States and Iraq.
