Their Story
SFC Russell Paul Borea served with the U.S. Army's Troop A, 2nd Squadron, 7th Cavalry, based at Fort Bliss, Texas. Originally from Tucson, Arizona, Borea was deployed as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, a military campaign initiated by the United States in March 2003.
On January 19, 2007, SFC Borea was killed in Mosul, Iraq. The U.S. Army documented his death as resulting from hostile action, a stark reminder of the ongoing dangers faced by military personnel stationed in the region at that time.
Operation Iraqi Freedom aimed to dismantle alleged weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, a justification that later came under significant scrutiny as no such weapons were found. Despite this, the mission continued for several years with American forces remaining engaged in various capacities.
SFC Borea's death occurred during a period of intense conflict in Iraq, where coalition forces were frequently targeted by insurgent attacks. His service is remembered alongside many others who faced similar perils in a complex and challenging environment.
The conflict, which began in 2003, saw significant U.S. military involvement until its official conclusion in August 2010, marking a pivotal chapter in the region's recent history.
