SSG Stevon Alexander Booker, an American soldier from Apollo, PA, served in Company A, 1st Battalion, 64th Armor, and died in Baghdad on April 5, 2003.

Their Story

Stevon Alexander Booker, a staff sergeant in the United States Army, was born and raised in Apollo, Pennsylvania. At 34, he was serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, based at Fort Stewart, Georgia. His unit was actively involved in Operation Iraqi Freedom, a military campaign initiated by the United States in March 2003.

On April 5, 2003, SSG Booker was in Baghdad, Iraq, when he was killed in a hostile incident. This was during a period marked by intense combat operations as Coalition forces advanced into the Iraqi capital.

His death was one of the early American casualties in Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that eventually saw the loss of 4,418 American service members, according to official reports. The operation, which began with the aim of toppling Saddam Hussein's regime, concluded in August 2010.

SSG Booker's commitment to his unit and his service reflect the dedication and sacrifices made by military personnel during this complex and prolonged conflict. His passing left a void in his hometown of Apollo and among his fellow soldiers at Fort Stewart.

The grief following his death underscores the profound loss experienced by families and communities when service members perish in conflicts far from home.
