Their Story
Major Gerald Michael Bloomfield II served in the United States Marine Corps as part of HMLA-369, MAG-39, 3D MAW, based at Camp Pendleton, California. Born in Ypsilanti, Michigan, Bloomfield dedicated his career to military service and was deployed to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Operation Iraqi Freedom began in March 2003 as a U.S.-led coalition aimed to dismantle alleged weapons of mass destruction and end Saddam Hussein's regime. Bloomfield's unit, HMLA-369, played a crucial role in providing aerial support during the conflict. The operation saw intense combat and varying degrees of hostilities across the country.
On November 2, 2005, Major Bloomfield lost his life in Ali An Nu Man, Iraq. His death was recorded as a result of hostile action. The period from 2005 to 2007 was particularly lethal for U.S. forces, with heightened sectarian violence in Iraq, especially following the 2006 bombing of the al-Askari Mosque.
Bloomfield was among many who faced the complexities and dangers of the conflict. His commitment to his duty reflects the broader experiences of U.S. military personnel during a tumultuous time. His memory is honored for his service and sacrifice, as with all others who served.
Operation Iraqi Freedom concluded in August 2010, but the history and impact of the conflict continue to be examined and remembered by those who experienced it and the families affected.
