Cpl. Thomas Alan Blair served with the United States Marine Corps, attached to the 2nd Low Altitude Air Defense Battalion, Marine Air Control Group 28, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, based out of Cherry Point, North Carolina.
Blair, originally from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, was among the early casualties of Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict initiated by the United States and coalition forces on March 19, 2003. The operation aimed to depose the regime of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.
On March 24, 2003, Blair was engaged in hostile encounters in An Nasiriyah, Iraq, a city that became a focal point during the early days of the invasion. His death was one of the first among American forces as they advanced through the region.
