SPC Robert Edward Blair, 22, from Ocala, FL, served in the Army's 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry, and died in Baghdad on May 25, 2006, during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Their Story
Specialist Robert Edward Blair was a young soldier from Ocala, Florida, serving in the United States Army. At the time of his deployment, he was assigned to Company C, 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, based in Baumholder, Germany.
Blair's unit was part of the broader U.S. military forces involved in Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began in March 2003. This operation aimed to dismantle weapons of mass destruction and end the regime of Saddam Hussein, although no such weapons were ultimately found.
On May 25, 2006, Blair tragically lost his life in Baghdad, Iraq. His death was classified as hostile, indicating it occurred due to enemy action. This period marked one of the most violent phases of the conflict, with increased insurgency and sectarian violence gripping the nation.
The Defense Casualty Analysis System recorded his death promptly, marking another somber entry in the records of American service members who died in Iraq. Blair's loss was felt deeply by his unit and family back home.
Operation Iraqi Freedom continued until August 2010, transitioning to Operation New Dawn as the U.S. shifted its mission to stability operations. Blair's sacrifice remains a poignant reminder of the human cost associated with military engagements.
