Their Story
Cpl. Jonathan Fleming Blair served with Company B, 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, part of Task Force Band of Brothers, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. On November 19, 2005, Blair lost his life in Bayji, Iraq, at the age of 21. His death was entered into the Defense Casualty Analysis System as a hostile incident.
Blair was part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, a military operation that began in March 2003. The operation was aimed at toppling the regime of Saddam Hussein and later sought to stabilize the region amid rising insurgency and sectarian violence.
At the time of Blair's death, the conflict in Iraq was among its deadliest phases. The period from 2005 to 2007 saw heightened violence, including the aftermath of the February 2006 bombing of the al-Askari Shrine in Samarra, which escalated sectarian tensions.
