CPL Stephen Richard Bixler, 20, from Suffield, CT, served in the Marine Corps and died on May 4, 2006, in Fallujah, Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Their Story

Stephen Richard Bixler was born in Suffield, Connecticut, and embarked on a path of service by joining the United States Marine Corps. As a Corporal, he was assigned to the Headquarters and Service Company, 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, Regimental Combat Team 5, I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), 2nd Marine Division, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

His deployment to Iraq came at a time of intense conflict. Operation Iraqi Freedom began in March 2003, with the aim of dismantling weapons of mass destruction and ending the regime of Saddam Hussein. By the time CPL Bixler arrived, the mission had expanded to include counterinsurgency operations and the stabilization of the region. His unit was stationed in Fallujah, a city that had become a focal point of insurgent activity.

On May 4, 2006, CPL Bixler's service was tragically cut short. He was killed by hostile action in Fallujah, Iraq. His death was reported, and his name was entered into the Defense Casualty Analysis System, marking the profound loss of a young Marine who had served his country with dedication.

The impact of his loss was felt deeply in his hometown of Suffield, where he was remembered for his commitment to the values of the Marine Corps and his willingness to serve in the face of danger. His family, friends, and fellow Marines mourned the passing of a brave young man whose life was devoted to service.

Operation Iraqi Freedom officially concluded in August 2010, but the legacy of those who served and sacrificed, like CPL Bixler, continues to be honored and remembered.
