Lance Corporal Dustin Vincent Birch, a 22-year-old Marine Reservist from Saint Anthony, Idaho, died on June 9, 2005, in Haqlaniyah, Iraq, during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Their Story

Dustin Vincent Birch, a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps Reserve, was a member of C Company, 4th Tank Battalion, 4th Marine Division, based in Boise, Idaho. Born and raised in Saint Anthony, Idaho, Birch was known for his commitment to service and dedication to his unit.

Operation Iraqi Freedom, which began in March 2003, aimed to dismantle weapons of mass destruction and end the regime of Saddam Hussein. By 2005, the conflict had intensified with increasing insurgent activity.

On June 9, 2005, Birch lost his life in Haqlaniyah, a town located in the Al Anbar province of Iraq. The area was known for its challenging operational environment during the height of the insurgency.

Birch's death was classified as hostile, a term used by the U.S. Department of Defense to indicate it occurred as a result of enemy action. His name was subsequently added to the Defense Casualty Analysis System.

The period from 2005 to 2007 marked some of the deadliest years of the conflict, with a surge in violence following events such as the 2006 bombing of the al-Askari shrine.

Birch is remembered with respect and solemnity, his service and life honored by those who knew him and the broader military community.
