Their Story
Gregory John Billiter was born and raised in Villa Hills, Kentucky. He dedicated his life to serving his country, joining the Navy and becoming a Chief Petty Officer. Assigned to the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 11 based at Whidbey Island, Washington, Billiter was deployed to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Operation Iraqi Freedom began in March 2003, and by the time Billiter was stationed at Forward Operating Base Warrior in Iraq, the conflict had reached some of its most intense periods. The years 2005 to 2007 saw significant violence, with military personnel facing heightened risks amid sectarian strife.
On April 6, 2007, at the age of 36, CPO Billiter died at FOB Warrior. His death was classified as a result of hostile action, a stark reminder of the dangers faced by service members in the region.
