Stephen Anthony Bertolino, an American soldier from Orange, CA, died on November 29, 2003, in Haditha, Iraq, during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Their Story

Stephen Anthony Bertolino, known to many as 'Steve', served in the U.S. Army with dedication and commitment. At the age of 40, he was a member of the Aviation Maintenance, Troop CSS, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado.

On November 29, 2003, in the city of Haditha, Iraq, Stephen Bertolino lost his life due to hostile actions. This period marked a turbulent phase in Iraq, as the country grappled with an insurgency that followed the initial military operations.

Stephen's deployment to Iraq was part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict initiated in March 2003 with the intent of toppling the regime of Saddam Hussein. As the operation progressed, U.S. forces encountered unexpected resistance from various insurgent groups.

The loss of Stephen Bertolino is a somber reminder of the volatility and dangers faced by service members during wartime. His passing left a void in the lives of those who knew and served alongside him.

Operation Iraqi Freedom officially concluded in August 2010, but the years following Stephen's death were marked by ongoing challenges for both Iraq and the troops deployed there.
