Their Story
Herberth Anto Berrios Campos was a Specialist in the United States Army, assigned to HHC, 1st Battalion, 505th Infantry, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He hailed from Bealeton, Virginia, and was part of the American forces deployed to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
On July 24, 2009, at the age of 21, Berrios Campos was killed in action in Salman Pak, Iraq. His death is part of the tragic toll of the conflict, in which 4,418 American soldiers lost their lives.
Operation Iraqi Freedom began in March 2003, with a U.S.-led coalition invading Iraq to topple the regime of Saddam Hussein. Berrios Campos, like many of his fellow servicemen, was deployed to Iraq amid ongoing efforts to stabilize the country.
