Joseph Richard Berlin Jr was a Private First Class in the United States Army, assigned to Company A, Special Troops Battalion, 4th Infantry Division. Originally from Chelsea, Alabama, Berlin was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, before his deployment to Iraq.

On December 30, 2007, Berlin was killed in action in Baghdad, Iraq, during Operation Iraqi Freedom. His death was confirmed by the U.S. Department of Defense. He was 21 years old at the time of his passing.

Operation Iraqi Freedom, initiated on March 19, 2003, aimed to dismantle weapons of mass destruction and end Saddam Hussein's regime. The conflict involved numerous coalition forces, with significant engagements in urban areas such as Baghdad.
