CPL Anthony Kamalu Bento, a 23-year-old from San Diego, CA, served in the U.S. Army's 1st Battalion, 505th Infantry, and was killed in action on September 24, 2007, in Bayji, Iraq.
Their Story
Anthony Kamalu Bento was a dedicated service member of the United States Army, serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 505th Infantry Regiment, part of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Born and raised in San Diego, California, Bento chose a path of service, enlisting in the military to join the efforts in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
On September 24, 2007, Bento's life was tragically cut short in Bayji, Iraq, a town that had become a focal point of conflict during the Iraq War. The operation, which began in March 2003, saw many young soldiers sent far from home to face the uncertainties and dangers of combat.
Bento was one of 4,418 American military personnel who lost their lives in the operation, which officially concluded in August 2010. His death, marked as 'hostile,' underscores the harsh realities faced by those deployed to Iraq during its most tumultuous years, particularly between 2005 and 2007, when sectarian violence was at its peak.
CPL Bento's service and sacrifice are remembered alongside all who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom, highlighting the profound personal losses endured by families and communities across the United States. His commitment to duty and country stands as a testament to the courage of those who go to war.
In honoring Anthony Kamalu Bento, we acknowledge the grief and loss shared by his family, friends, and fellow soldiers, while reflecting on the human cost of conflict.
