Bennett, Keith Allen
Keith Allen Bennett, 32, a National Guard Staff Sergeant from Holtwood, PA, died in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, on December 11, 2005, during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Their Story
Staff Sergeant Keith Allen Bennett, a native of Holtwood, Pennsylvania, served with the 28th Military Police Company, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, based in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. He was part of the National Guard, a branch of the U.S. Army, when he was deployed to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
On December 11, 2005, Bennett lost his life in Ar Ramadi, Iraq. His death was recorded by the U.S. Army as resulting from hostile action. This period in Iraq was marked by significant unrest and violence, with 2005 noted as one of the deadliest years for coalition forces following the invasion.
Ar Ramadi, located in the Anbar Province, was a focal point of insurgent activity at the time. The region saw frequent engagements between U.S. forces and various militant groups. The dangers faced by military personnel like Bennett were considerable, with the risk of ambushes, IEDs, and direct combat ever present.
Bennett's service was part of a broader U.S. military operation that began in March 2003 with the invasion of Iraq. The operation aimed to remove the regime of Saddam Hussein and establish a stable, democratic government, but it faced numerous challenges, including sectarian violence and insurgency.
The loss of Bennett was felt deeply by his family, fellow soldiers, and community in Pennsylvania. His death is one of many that highlight the human cost of the conflict in Iraq, which concluded in August 2010.
