Their Story

Joseph Otto Behnke, a native of Brooklyn, New York, served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army National Guard. He was attached to C Battery, 1st Battalion, 258th Field Artillery, based in Jamaica, New York. His service in Iraq was part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, a U.S.-led military operation that commenced on March 19, 2003.

Behnke was deployed to Iraq as part of the broader mission aimed at dismantling alleged weapons of mass destruction and ending the regime of Saddam Hussein. His unit, like many others, faced the challenges of operating in a complex and often dangerous environment.

On December 4, 2004, Sergeant Behnke lost his life in Baghdad. The Department of Defense confirmed his death, marking a solemn moment for his unit and family. His passing is a reminder of the human cost of military engagements.

Operation Iraqi Freedom officially ended in August 2010, but the impact of the conflict continues to resonate. Behnke's service and sacrifice are remembered alongside those of many others who participated in the operation.

The community in Brooklyn and his fellow soldiers mourned his loss, reflecting on his dedication and the void left by his absence. His contributions and service record remain a testament to his commitment to his country.
