Their Story

Private First Class Gunnar Duane Becker was a young American soldier from Forestburg, South Dakota. He was assigned to B Company, 2nd Battalion, 63rd Armor Regiment, part of the 1st Infantry Division based in Vilseck, Germany. His deployment to Iraq was part of the broader effort known as Operation Iraqi Freedom.

On January 13, 2005, PFC Becker was killed in action in Mosul, Iraq. He was 19 years old at the time of his death. His unit was involved in operations typical of the U.S. military presence in Iraq, which included combat and stabilization missions.

Operation Iraqi Freedom began in March 2003, aiming to dismantle the government led by Saddam Hussein and eliminate alleged weapons of mass destruction. By the time of PFC Becker's death, the conflict had evolved into a complex mission involving counter-insurgency and nation-building efforts amid increasing violence.

During the period of 2005-2007, Iraq experienced significant sectarian violence, with attacks becoming more frequent and deadly. The conflict environment in Mosul was marked by insurgent activities and military operations aimed at stabilizing the region.

PFC Becker's death is a reminder of the human cost of war and the personal sacrifices made by young soldiers deployed far from home. His service is remembered by his family, friends, and fellow soldiers, who continue to honor his memory.
