Their Story

Alan Norman Bean Jr was a Sergeant in the Army National Guard, assigned to the HHB, 1st Battalion, 86th Field Artillery in Williston, Vermont. Born and raised in Bridport, Vermont, SGT Bean was a part of the U.S. military deployment during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

On May 25, 2004, SGT Bean lost his life in Iskandariyah, Iraq. The U.S. Army recorded his death as a result of hostile action, a term used to denote combat-related fatalities. He was 22 years old at the time of his passing.

His death occurred during a particularly volatile period in Iraq, as the initial military campaign transitioned into a complex insurgency. This phase of the conflict saw increased risks for service members deployed in the region.

SGT Bean's service in Iraq was part of a broader American military effort that began with the invasion in March 2003. The operation aimed to dismantle suspected weapons of mass destruction and establish a new political order in Iraq.

Operation Iraqi Freedom officially concluded in August 2010. However, the years of conflict left a lasting impact on those who served, as well as on the Iraqi population.

SGT Bean's sacrifice is remembered with respect and solemnity, reflecting the profound loss experienced by his family, community, and fellow service members.
