SSG Justin Lynn Bauer, 24, from Loveland, CO, served in the US Army and died in Baghdad, Iraq on January 10, 2009, due to hostile actions.
Their Story
Staff Sergeant Justin Lynn Bauer, a native of Loveland, Colorado, served with the U.S. Army's Company D, 2nd Battalion, 505th Infantry, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. At the age of 24, Bauer was among the American forces deployed to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict initiated in March 2003.
On January 10, 2009, Bauer was killed in Baghdad, Iraq, as a result of hostile actions. The operation, which had begun with the aim of toppling the regime of Saddam Hussein, saw fluctuating levels of violence over its duration.
The period during which Bauer served was marked by efforts to stabilize the country following years of conflict. Despite a decline in violence attributed to various military strategies, including the surge of U.S. troops, the environment remained perilous for those deployed.
Bauer's death is one of the many that occurred amid the complex landscape of Iraq, highlighting the ongoing risks faced by military personnel during the later stages of the operation.
Operation Iraqi Freedom officially concluded in August 2010, after several years of extensive military engagement aiming to establish a stable and secure Iraq.
