Baucus, Phillip Ellison
CPL Phillip Ellison Baucus, a 28-year-old Marine from Wolf Creek, Montana, died in Rawah, Iraq, on July 29, 2006, during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Their Story
CPL Phillip Ellison Baucus served in the United States Marine Corps as part of Delta Company, 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, Regimental Combat Team 7, 1st Marine Division, based in Twentynine Palms, California. He was deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, a military operation that began in March 2003.
Baucus, hailing from Wolf Creek, Montana, was operating in Iraq where intense conflict had persisted since the U.S.-led invasion. The operation aimed to dismantle the regime of Saddam Hussein, but ongoing insurgency and sectarian violence marked the years that followed.
On July 29, 2006, CPL Baucus lost his life in Rawah, Iraq. The Marine Corps reported his death as a result of hostile actions, a fate shared by many of his fellow service members during one of the operation's deadliest phases.
The period surrounding Baucus's death was marked by escalated violence, particularly following the bombing of a significant religious site in early 2006, which intensified sectarian strife.
His death is a solemn reminder of the conflict's human cost and the enduring grief of families who lost loved ones during the operation. Operation Iraqi Freedom officially concluded in August 2010.
