LCpl Matthew Ryan Barnes, a 20-year-old Marine from West Monroe, LA, was killed in hostile action on February 14, 2006, in Al Qaim, Iraq.
Their Story
Lance Corporal Matthew Ryan Barnes served with the U.S. Marine Corps as part of Headquarters and Service Company, 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines, Regimental Combat Team 2, 2nd Marine Division, based in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Born and raised in West Monroe, Louisiana, Barnes was dispatched to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
On February 14, 2006, Lance Corporal Barnes lost his life in Al Qaim, a city located in the Al Anbar Province of Iraq, a region that was a significant focus of military operations during the conflict. His death came as a result of hostile action, a term which encompasses enemy attacks including small arms fire, explosives, and other combat-related incidents.
Operation Iraqi Freedom began on March 19, 2003, with the United States and coalition forces aiming to dismantle alleged weapons of mass destruction and to remove the government of Saddam Hussein from power. The operation saw extensive combat operations, particularly in volatile regions like Al Anbar, where insurgent activity was prolific.
Barnes's passing underscores the profound human cost of the conflict, a cost felt deeply by families and communities back home. His contributions and those of his fellow service members were part of a broader military strategy that continued until the official conclusion of the operation in August 2010.
His family, friends, and fellow Marines remember him for his service and dedication. The grief of his loss is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by many during the years of conflict in Iraq.
