Their Story

Specialist Jonathan Paul Barnes was a dedicated member of the United States Army, serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, based out of Fort Hood, Texas. He enlisted with a commitment to serve his country and was deployed to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Operation Iraqi Freedom commenced on March 19, 2003, as a U.S.-led effort to depose the government of Saddam Hussein. SPC Barnes's unit was involved in various operations aimed at stabilizing the region following the initial invasion.

Tragically, on July 26, 2003, while stationed in Baghdad, Iraq, Jonathan Paul Barnes lost his life. The circumstances of his death were recorded by the military as hostile, a stark reminder of the dangers faced by service members in conflict zones.

Barnes hailed from Anderson, Missouri, where he was remembered as a young man with a sense of duty and a strong connection to his community. His passing at the age of 21 brought sorrow to family, friends, and fellow soldiers.

Operation Iraqi Freedom concluded in August 2010, but the impacts of the conflict, including the loss of Jonathan Barnes, continue to be felt by those who knew him and by the nation he served.
