Thomas Joseph Barbieri II, an American SPC from Gaithersburg, MD, served in the Army's 1st Battalion, 325th Infantry and was killed in action on August 23, 2006, in Yusifiyah, Iraq.

Their Story

Thomas Joseph Barbieri II was a Specialist in the United States Army, serving with Company D, 1st Battalion, 325th Infantry Regiment, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Born and raised in Gaithersburg, Maryland, Barbieri enlisted to serve his country during the period of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Operation Iraqi Freedom began in March 2003, with the aim of removing the regime of Saddam Hussein. As the conflict progressed, U.S. forces found themselves engaged in complex operations amidst a backdrop of increasing sectarian violence. The period from 2005 to 2007 saw some of the deadliest engagements for American troops.

On August 23, 2006, Barbieri's life was tragically cut short during a hostile incident in Yusifiyah, Iraq. This area, part of the volatile Baghdad Governorate, witnessed intense clashes as coalition forces sought to stabilize the region.

Barbieri's death was recorded in the Defense Casualty Analysis System, marking another somber day for the armed forces and his family. He was 24 years old at the time of his passing, a young life marked by service and sacrifice.

His passing is a reminder of the human cost of conflict, impacting families and communities both in the United States and abroad. Operation Iraqi Freedom officially concluded in August 2010, but the memories of those who served and fell remain vivid.
