Their Story

Michael Andrew Baloga was born in Everett, Washington, and later joined the United States Army. He was assigned to Troop A, 6th Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, based in Fort Hood, Texas. His deployment to Iraq was part of the broader Operation Iraqi Freedom, a military operation initiated in March 2003.

On July 26, 2007, Baloga lost his life while serving in Muqdadiyah, a city located in the Diyala Governorate of Iraq. His death was attributed to hostile action, a common danger for many service members stationed in the region during the conflict.

Operation Iraqi Freedom aimed to dismantle weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, although such weapons were ultimately not found. The operation saw significant military engagement, with American forces actively involved in combat and stabilization efforts throughout the country.

Baloga's unit, the 6th Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, was part of the 1st Cavalry Division. This division played a crucial role in several operations during the conflict, including efforts to secure key areas and support rebuilding initiatives.

Michael Baloga's death marked a personal loss for his family and community, reflecting the broader human cost of a war that affected thousands of military personnel and Iraqi civilians alike.
