Their Story

CPL Riley Elam Baker, a native of Pacific, Missouri, served with the Marine Corps' H&S Company, 3rd Battalion, 8th Marines, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. At the age of 22, he was deployed to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict initiated in March 2003.

During his service, CPL Baker was stationed in Ar Ramadi, a city in the western part of Iraq's Al Anbar province. This region was known for intense combat operations and was a focal point during the conflict.

On June 22, 2006, CPL Baker lost his life due to hostile action in Ar Ramadi. His death was one of the many during a period marked by heightened violence and instability in Iraq.

Operation Iraqi Freedom was a significant military engagement for the United States, with thousands of American service members, including CPL Baker, losing their lives. By the time the operation concluded in August 2010, it had profoundly impacted countless families and communities.

CPL Baker's sacrifice is remembered alongside the 4,418 American service members who perished during the conflict, each loss a reminder of the war's profound human cost.
