PFC Joe Luis Baines, an American soldier from Newark, NJ, died at 19 in Taji, Iraq, on December 16, 2006, during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Their Story
Joe Luis Baines, a Private First Class in the United States Army, was serving with Troop C, 1st Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, based at Fort Hood, Texas. Born in Newark, New Jersey, Baines joined the military at a young age, committing to serve his country during a period marked by significant international conflict.
Operation Iraqi Freedom, which began in March 2003, involved the deployment of many young American soldiers like Baines. The operation aimed to remove the regime in Iraq and establish a democratic government. This was a time of intense combat and heightened risk, particularly in regions such as Taji, where Baines was stationed.
On December 16, 2006, Baines lost his life in Taji, a city known for its strategic and military significance during the conflict. The U.S. Department of Defense reported his death as a result of hostile action, a fate shared by many of his peers during this tumultuous period.
Baines' service is a reminder of the human cost of war, with his name now listed among those recorded in the Defense Casualty Analysis System. His passing came during one of the deadliest periods of the operation, when sectarian violence was rampant following the bombing of the al-Askari shrine earlier that year.
The loss of Baines was felt deeply by his family, his unit, and his community, reflecting the profound personal impact of global conflicts. His story remains a testament to the sacrifices made by young soldiers in the pursuit of their duties.
