Their Story
Private First Class Lionel Ayro was born and raised in Jeanerette, Louisiana. He joined the United States Army and was assigned to the 73D Engineer Company, part of the 25th Infantry Division based at Fort Lewis, Washington.
PFC Ayro was deployed to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, which began in March 2003. This operation was aimed at toppling the government of Saddam Hussein and establishing a democratic government.
On December 21, 2004, PFC Ayro lost his life in Mosul, Iraq, at the age of 22. The U.S. Army recorded his cause of death as hostile, a term used to denote casualties resulting from enemy actions.
