Their Story
Sergeant Robert Thomas Ayres III was a 23-year-old American soldier from Los Angeles, California. He served in the United States Army as part of Company G, 3rd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, stationed in Vilseck, Germany.
Ayres was deployed to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began in March 2003. This military operation was initiated with the intent to disarm Iraq, end Saddam Hussein's support for terrorism, and free the Iraqi people.
On September 29, 2007, Ayres lost his life in Baghdad, Iraq, as a result of hostile action. His unit was part of the U.S. efforts to stabilize the region during a period marked by intense sectarian violence.
The years 2005 to 2007 were particularly deadly in the Iraqi conflict, with a significant escalation in violence following the 2006 bombing of the al-Askari Mosque. This period saw a surge in insurgent attacks and sectarian strife.
Robert Ayres's death is one among the many who perished in the course of Operation Iraqi Freedom, which officially concluded in August 2010. His service, like that of his fellow soldiers, is remembered with respect and solemnity.
