Their Story
Andrew Julian Aviles was a young Marine serving as a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps Reserve. Born and raised in Tampa, Florida, he was a member of Headquarters and Service Company, 4th Assault Amphibian Battalion, 4th Marine Division.
Aviles was deployed to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, a military campaign initiated by the United States and its allies in March 2003. The operation aimed to dismantle the regime of Saddam Hussein and eliminate alleged weapons of mass destruction.
On April 7, 2003, Aviles lost his life in Iraq due to hostile action. His death was among the early casualties of the conflict, which saw significant combat operations followed by a prolonged insurgency.
Aviles was one of 4,418 American service members who died during the course of Operation Iraqi Freedom, which formally concluded in August 2010. His passing is a stark reminder of the human cost of military engagements.
