PFC Jeffrey Alan Avery, a 19-year-old from Colorado Springs, CO, served with the Army's 571st Military Police Company and was killed in Muqdadiyah, Iraq on April 23, 2007.

Their Story

Private First Class Jeffrey Alan Avery was a young soldier from Colorado Springs, Colorado. He served with the 571st Military Police Company, 97th Military Police Battalion, part of the 42nd MP Brigade based at Fort Lewis, Washington. Avery was among the many American servicemen who participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that sought to address the political situation in Iraq.

Avery was deployed to Iraq during a particularly challenging period. The years 2005 to 2007 were some of the deadliest during the operation. The situation in Iraq was marked by intense hostilities and complex combat scenarios. On April 23, 2007, Avery lost his life in Muqdadiyah, a city situated in the Diyala Governorate, approximately 80 kilometers northeast of Baghdad. His death was classified as hostile, reflecting the severe conditions faced by military personnel in the region.

At just 19 years old, Avery joined the ranks of the 4,418 American military casualties reported during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Each loss during the conflict carried a profound impact on families and communities back home.

Operation Iraqi Freedom, initiated in March 2003, was a prolonged engagement that officially concluded in August 2010. The operation left a lasting legacy, with Avery's death serving as a somber reminder of the human cost of war. His service and sacrifice are remembered alongside his fellow soldiers who served in the complex and often dangerous environment of Iraq.
