First Lieutenant Garrison Charles Avery, a native of Lincoln, Nebraska, served with Company D, 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Avery was deployed to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that commenced in March 2003.

On February 1, 2006, Avery's life was tragically cut short in Baghdad, Iraq. His death was classified by military authorities as resulting from hostile action. He was 23 years old at the time of his passing.
