Their Story

Private First Class Shawn Michael Atkins was a soldier in the United States Army, serving with the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Brigade, 1st Armored Division. This unit was based in Hanau, Germany, but Atkins was deployed to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Born and raised in Parker, Colorado, Atkins was part of the military efforts in Iraq following the initial invasion that began in March 2003. His unit was involved in operations during a period marked by increasing insurgency against coalition forces in Iraq.

On June 14, 2004, Atkins was killed in action in Baghdad. The Department of Defense confirmed his death, marking him among the American personnel who died during the conflict. His passing at the age of 20 is a somber reminder of the human costs of war.

Operation Iraqi Freedom, which began in March 2003, aimed to topple the regime of Saddam Hussein. However, the conflict extended beyond the initial military victory, evolving into a complex struggle involving various armed groups and coalitions.
