Their Story
Richard Steve Arriaga, originally from Ganado, Texas, was a Specialist in the United States Army. At the young age of 20, he was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 4th Battalion, 42nd Field Artillery, based at Fort Hood, Texas. This unit was deployed to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, a military campaign initiated in March 2003.
Arriaga's service in Iraq was part of the broader US military effort to stabilize the country following the initial invasion. The campaign aimed to dismantle the regime of Saddam Hussein, but it soon faced an unanticipated insurgency. Conflict environments were often volatile and dangerous, as military operations transitioned from conventional warfare to counter-insurgency efforts.
On September 18, 2003, SPC Arriaga was killed in Tikrit, Iraq. His death was categorized as hostile, a reflection of the perilous conditions faced by many service members during this period of the conflict. Tikrit, known as the hometown of Saddam Hussein, was a focal point of resistance and insurgent activity, making it a challenging operational environment.
Arriaga's passing is a solemn reminder of the human cost of military engagements. As Operation Iraqi Freedom progressed, the loss of life among both military and civilian populations underscored the profound impact of the conflict. His service and sacrifice are remembered alongside those of countless others who have served in similar circumstances.
Operation Iraqi Freedom officially concluded in August 2010, but the years following Arriaga's death saw continued challenges in achieving long-term stability in the region.
