CPL Joseph John Anzack Jr., 20, from Torrance, CA, served in the U.S. Army's Company D, 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry, Fort Drum, and died in Al Taqa, Iraq, on May 23, 2007.

Their Story

CPL Joseph John Anzack Jr. was a soldier in the United States Army, serving with Company D, 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, based out of Fort Drum, New York. Born and raised in Torrance, California, Anzack enlisted in the Army with a commitment to serve his country.

Deployed as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, CPL Anzack was among the numerous American personnel stationed in Iraq during a period marked by intense conflict and violence. By 2007, the operation had entered one of its most challenging phases, following increased sectarian violence in the wake of the 2006 bombing of the al-Askari shrine.

On May 23, 2007, CPL Anzack lost his life in Al Taqa, Iraq, a small town located within the volatile regions south of Baghdad. His death came as part of hostile actions in an area that was a focal point of insurgency and military operations.

Anzack's passing is a somber reminder of the personal costs borne by those involved in military service. At just 20 years old, his life was cut short under the circumstances of war, a reality faced by many young soldiers.

His sacrifice, along with that of his fellow servicemen and women, remains a poignant element of the history of the Iraq conflict, which began in March 2003 and continued until its conclusion in August 2010.
