CPL Michael Justin Anaya, 23, from Crestview, FL, served with the U.S. Army's 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment when he died in Mosul, Iraq on April 12, 2009.

Their Story

Corporal Michael Justin Anaya, an American soldier from Crestview, Florida, was serving with Company A, 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, part of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division. He was stationed at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii before his deployment to Iraq.

Anaya was part of the United States Army’s efforts during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a military campaign initiated in March 2003. His unit was engaged in operations in Mosul, a city in northern Iraq, which was a focal point of conflict during the war.

On April 12, 2009, Anaya lost his life in Mosul. The U.S. Army officially recorded his cause of death as hostile, reflecting the ongoing dangers faced by military personnel in the region.

The loss of Corporal Anaya occurred during a period when U.S. forces were working to stabilize Iraq amid ongoing insurgent activities. His death was part of the broader human cost of the conflict.

Operation Iraqi Freedom formally concluded in August 2010, marking the end of major combat operations in Iraq. However, the impact of the conflict continues to resonate with the families of those who served.

Michael Justin Anaya’s commitment to his duties and his untimely death are remembered by his family, friends, and fellow soldiers, who mourn the loss of a life dedicated to service.
