SSG Ahmed Kousay Altaie, an American soldier, died on February 22, 2012, in Baghdad, Iraq, at age 46.

Their Story

Ahmed Kousay Altaie, a Staff Sergeant with the United States Army, was serving in Iraq when he was killed on February 22, 2012. Born in Iraq and later becoming a naturalized American citizen, Altaie joined the Army and was assigned to the Provincial Reconstruction Team, Divisional Training Center, STB, 4th Infantry Division, based out of Fort Hood, Texas.

Altaie's role in the military placed him in Baghdad, a city that witnessed significant turmoil during the years following the U.S.-led invasion in 2003. The operation, known as Operation Iraqi Freedom, aimed to dismantle weapons of mass destruction and to end the regime of Saddam Hussein. The conflict officially ended in August 2010, but violence persisted in the region.

On the day of his death, Altaie became one of the many casualties of the ongoing instability in Iraq. His death is recorded as hostile, highlighting the continued risks that military personnel faced even after the official conclusion of the conflict.

The loss of Altaie was a reminder of the complex and dangerous nature of post-conflict environments, where lingering hostilities can still claim lives. Altaie left behind a legacy of service and dedication, moving from his birthplace in Iraq to serve his adopted country with honor.
