Joseph David Alomar, a native of Brooklyn, New York, served as a Petty Officer 2nd Class in the United States Navy. He was assigned to the USS Ashland (LSD-48), stationed at Virginia Beach Little Creek, Virginia. His commitment to his duty took him to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a mission that began in March 2003.

Alomar was stationed at Camp Bucca, a U.S. military facility in Iraq that was primarily used for detaining enemy combatants. On January 17, 2007, Alomar was killed in action at the age of 22. His death was recorded in the Defense Casualty Analysis System, marking another somber day for his family, colleagues, and nation.
