Their Story
Captain Marcus Ray Alford Sr, from Knoxville, Tennessee, served with distinction in the United States Army. Assigned to C Company, 1st Squadron, 230th Cavalry Regiment, 25th Combat Aviation Brigade, Alford was part of the Task Organization to United States Division-North.
Captain Alford was deployed to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, the military operation initiated in March 2003. His unit operated out of Contingency Operating Base Q-West, a strategic location in northern Iraq.
On February 21, 2010, at the age of 28, Captain Alford was killed in action at COB Q-West. His death was one of the numerous losses sustained by American forces throughout the conflict, which resulted in 4,418 American service members losing their lives.
