Who is Olódumarè?
Olódumarè (also known as Olorun and Olofi in different regional and diaspora traditions) is the Supreme Being of the Yoruba cosmos — omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent. Unlike the Orisa, Olódumarè is formless and cannot be represented by any idol or image. Olódumarè is neither male nor female, neither young nor old, and exists before time and beyond space.
In Yoruba theology, Olódumarè created the universe and delegated its management to the Orisa. The relationship between Olódumarè and the Orisa is analogous to a king and their chiefs — the king rules all, but governance flows through representatives. Olódumarè set the Ifa oracle through Orunmila as the primary channel of divine will, so that human beings could understand the path of right living without burdening the Supreme Being directly.
The concept of Ashe (àṣẹ) — the divine power or life force that flows through all things — originates in Olódumarè. When Orisa perform miracles, when herbalists heal, when prayers are answered, it is the àṣẹ of Olódumarè working through the created order.
Origin — How Olódumarè Became Orisa
Olódumarè exists before time. In the beginning there was Olódumarè and nothing else. Olódumarè holds the àṣà (divine essence) that animates all existence.
When Olódumarè determined to create the world, the divine power was sent outward through the primordial Orisa — particularly through Obatala (Orisa-nla), who was given the task of shaping human bodies from clay, and Oduduwa, who was given authority over the dry land. Olódumarè breathed the divine àṣà of life into the clay forms that Obatala shaped, becoming the source of every human ori (destiny soul). In many houses of practice, the story is understood as both historical memory and spiritual instruction, showing how divine authority is established through sacrifice, wisdom, and righteous conduct.
Sacred Stories & Myths
Olódumarè is the ultimate judge at the end of each life. Every human being kneels before Olódumarè and chooses their ori (personal destiny) before entering the world. Olódumarè does not interfere day-to-day but is always watching the moral order of the universe.
The great cosmic dispute between the Orisa and the Ajogun — forces of blessing and forces of adversity — is governed by Olódumarè, who maintains the balance through Ifa, the sacred oracle given to Orunmila. Recited narratives often emphasize consequences, restoration, and the principle that character determines the quality of destiny.
Sacred Attributes & Correspondences

Appearance, Hairstyle & Sacred Regalia

Nature, Character & Sacred Proverbs
Olódumarè is perfectly just, all-knowing, and beyond corruption. Unlike some Orisa who can be propitiated to change their behavior, Olódumarè is immovable in righteousness. There is no trickery, bargaining, or coercion possible with Olódumarè. Character (ìwà) — particularly ìwà pẹlẹ (gentle, good character) — is what Olódumarè values above all ritual practice.
