Who is Egungun Eleku?

Egungun Eleku is a powerful ancestral masquerade spirit associated with great wisdom, dignity, and the protection offered by the elder ancestors. In Yoruba traditions, Egungun Eleku represents a family’s senior line of ancestors who continue to watch over the living through the disguise of masquerade. Worshippers honor Egungun Eleku during festivals and ancestral ceremonies, asking for blessings, guidance, and the safeguarding of the lineage.

The spirit’s energy is solemn, noble, and deeply rooted in history. He teaches that the community remains whole when the elders are remembered and respected. Offerings to Egungun Eleku include kola nut, palm oil, and foods presented during masquerade ceremonies.

In modern times, he is a reminder that the living inherit more than property; they inherit the responsibility to uphold tradition.
