James Russell Zimmerman served as a 1st Lieutenant with the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 1, I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), 2nd Marine Division based in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Originally from Aroostook, Maine, Zimmerman was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On November 2, 2010, Zimmerman was killed in hostile action at Camp Bastion, a major British military base in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. This tragic event contributed to the loss of 2,356 American service members throughout the operation.
