Alejandro Jay Yazzie, a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps, was born in Rock Point, Arizona. At the age of 23, he was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, a mission initiated in October 2001 in response to global terrorism.
Lance Corporal Yazzie served with the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, Regimental Combat Team 7, Marine Expeditionary Brigade-Afghanistan Forward, 1st Marine Division, based in Camp Pendleton, California. His unit was tasked with providing crucial engineering support, including construction, demolition, and minefield clearance.
On February 16, 2010, Yazzie lost his life in Helmand Province, a region of strategic importance in the conflict. The Department of Defense reported his death as a result of hostile action, underscoring the risks faced by military personnel stationed in this volatile area.
